Review
Companion is a funny yet unsettling dark comedy directed by Drew Hancock. It’s a sci-fi thriller that keeps you guessing while mixing humor with some seriously shocking moments. From the trailer, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect, but wow I was wrong! Sitting in the theater, I couldn’t believe how many times the audience gasped or let out a collective “Ohhh.” It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie stir up that kind of reaction.
The story kicks off with Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid), a couple who seem totally in love, meeting up with friends for a weekend getaway. At first, it feels like a lighthearted romantic setup until things spiral out of control. One of the guests decides to reject “normal” society, and chaos follows. This leads to some big questions: What drives people to take such extreme actions? Why do others hesitate to involve the authorities? And how much of this ties back to the idea of maintaining a healthy relationship?
Jack Quaid, who’s mostly known for his TV roles, really shines here. It’s great to see him transitioning to the big screen, and he nails his part. He brings a mix of charm, humor, and just enough darkness to keep you on edge. Honestly, I couldn’t take my eyes off his performance.
Sophie Thatcher is equally fantastic. Her character has so many layers, and she keeps you guessing about her next move. Without spoiling anything, she faces some intense challenges, and watching her navigate them is a big part of what makes the movie so gripping.
Overall, I loved the blend of humor and thrills. The twists kept me hooked, and there were definitely moments that made me go, “OHHHH!” because they were so unexpected. It’s the kind of movie I’d happily watch again once it’s out on streaming or DVD. And with the way it ended, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a sequel down the road.
If you’re into sci-fi thrillers with a darkly comedic edge, Companion is definitely worth checking out!
